Lower Elementary Activities

Pizza Geography
Students will construct their own personal pizza. They will be making the shape and topography of the Philippines country. Materials used are dough, pizza sauce, cheese, and pizza toppings. Students will first be asked to make the shape of the island best they can, and begin adding the topography. Depending on the selection of toppings the students will have to designate a topping to describe the topography of the country. For example sausage will be used to identify mountains or high peaks. Not only is this an educational activity, it is one that I know the students will love! A reminder will be sent home in advance, so when we make the pizzas they will take the place of lunch for that particular day.

Upper Elementary Activities

Protecting the Coral Reefs
Using this online website as a starting point http://www.philippines.hvu.nl/animals3.htm. students will learn about the destruction that is happening to the coral reefs which surround the Philippines. Afterwards, the students will be asked to write a letter to the Philippines government, and tell them why they think protecting the reefs are important. The letter should be persuasive and explain a plan of action that should be taken by the government, and why it will help better the reefs and country.

Fine Arts Activities

Parol Decorations
With the upcoming holiday season, students will be researching the Philippines Christmas. Students will first complete a Venn diagram on the similarities and differences compared to their own personal holiday that is celebrated with their family. Then the students will make a Filipino decoration called a Parol to take home and share with their family, in hopes they will share the tradition they have learned about in the Philippines.
